Asakusa – The Sensoji Temple

On BDW’s one day off in Tokyo, we took the Tokyo Ginza line and a detour to go to Kamiyacho (H line/Grey line). End to end, the Tokyo Ginza line brought us to Asakusa where the Sensoji temple was all the way to Shibuya.

Our first stop was at the far end of the Ginza Line. The Asakusa – Sensoji Temple is a huuge Buddhist temple that’s just a few steps away from the Asakusa station. Between the temple’s two gates is Nakamise which is a line of  small shops selling a variety of local food wrapped in the prettiest packages and other souvenir items. We did most of our pasalubong shopping here for friends and office mates, mostly food items and a bunch of tshirts for BDW, his dad and my dad :) We also bought DW a sumo shirt here! We really wanted to buy him a kid’s kimono but it was too expensive and we were pretty sure DW wouldn’t wear it anyway :P We saw a ninja outfit for kids too!

Inside the Temple, there was a monk offering prayers. The altar was behind a giant box where people tossed coins in and also prayed. A wire fence stood between that box and the altar.
