Soon A School Boy

Last Wednesday,  BDW and I took a leave of absence from work to go to DW’s assessment at his pre-school. (We’ve finally decided to go and try out a pre-school in our neighborhood for a quarter). The goal of the assessment is to find out what a kid knows so that the teacher can adjust her lesson and activity plans accordingly. Being the big worrywart that I am the first thing that I thought about was what if DW wasn’t in the mood? Or is in one of his really makulit moods where he just does the opposite of what you ask him to do? DW also has an ongoing thing where he says his name and adds Lang! like “DW Lang!” because this kid now wants to do everything by himself.

You know what, I was just being a worrywart because DW did so well!

Here’s what happened:

We took DW to his school (we now call it big school and Kindermusik is well Kindermusik).

We took him to Room 1

This is where  where we stayed. I made a mental note to get BugAway for DW since the school is beside an empty lot and is surrounded by plants and trees and therefore there were a few mosquitos buzzing around. *Dengue alert!*

I spent an hour fussing and peeking and seeing what was happening through the windows because we weren’t allowed inside the classroom.

That’s DW and Teacher Sinta. I saw them talking and playing. DW got toys from a shelf, played with them AND RETURNED THEM RIGHT AFTER! Good boy talaga!  In Kindermusik the kids would always pack away their toys after each activity and would sing a song while doing so. We’ve done it at home and that practice stuck and seeing DW do it unsupervised was amazing!

Then he did this. The boy got a kettle and a pot and started cooking! He took out plastic veggies from the toy refrigerator and he specifically chose Brocolli and Pepper and named them out too. It was so funny seeing DW just cook and get utensils from the classroom’s toy kitchen and just cook!

After about 45 minutes, Teacher Sinta came out of the classroom and told me “Mommy Neva, you can come get DW. Actually kanina pa po kami tapos” Nyahahaha! It was great to see DW enjoy the activity so I guess I need to be less worried about him adjusting to his new school.

Teacher Sinta was surprised at DW’s vocabulary and his ability to pick-up instructions quickly. She was just as amused as us when DW started “cooking” too with matching taktak of the scooper (which DW probably picked up from seeing me prepare his milk hehe).

I was so proud of DW! The assessment isn’t a test but just seeing our boy do his own thing and be so self-assured was such a proud moment for me and BDW.  He’ll be starting school next week and I just finished buying all of his supplies. Wow, I can’t believe that we now have a school boy! I can’t believe where we are right now when yesterday DW was just this cooing, gurgling baby. Haaay!
