Have you ever been in and around QC lately? Although I was born and raised here, I’ve never really explored QC until I entered UP and found the small eateries and cafes in and around the Sikatuna and Teacher’s Villages. Did you know that the flower shop Petal Attraction, which is always included in those forwarded emails about weird shop names is actually along Maginhawa St? The shop is closed now unfortunately but a block away from there is a shop that sells probably the best burritos in QC Ababu, a persian place that my friends and I use to frequent for their kebab and rice used to be along Maginhawa too until that place moved to another location.

I’ve recently re-discovered Maginhawa with my friends and BDW. BDW was born and raised in the South but he’s come to appreciate QC too (although di pa sya sanay sa mga QC drivers ) We both love that Maginhawa is still a neighborhood and the shops there are all mom & pop dives without the big names and flashy neon signs of the big corporate food chains. I hope it stays this way and I hope I get to try more of the stuff that’s out there.

Here are two recommendations from me and BDW if you ever want to try out Maginhawa for yourself.

Don Day
Malingap St.

Ok, Don Day is in Malingap Street not Maginhawa but it’s easy to find, when you see the big Bayantel office along Maginhawa at your right, turn right and Don Day will be at your left. For 269 pesos you get unlimited Korean Barbecue + a Korean Buffet with homemade kimchi, japchae and others. Add 50 pesos and you get unlimited refills for sodas or iced tea. Can you say SULIT?! The place though is not air-conditioned and is open (fresh air haha).

As if I’ve never told you enough, DW was down with tummy troubles last week. He was feverish Monday evening and was full-blown sick from Tuesday to Wednesday. He had LBM and I found myself neck deep in crap and diapers for those two days. DW was weak too and wasn’t in the mood to play. He just wanted to lie down and he kept saying “book book”. He wanted to read books the whole day and would watch the TV only if  Special Agent OSO, Jojo  and the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse was on. Otherwise it was “book book”. We probably read most of his books that day and repeated a few favorites.

We took him to the hospital last Tuesday to have him checked by his Pedia. DW was always pooping after finishing a bottle of milk so we had to rule out gastroenteritis or amoebiasis.

On BDW’s one day off in Tokyo, we took the Tokyo Ginza line and a detour to go to Kamiyacho (H line/Grey line). End to end, the Tokyo Ginza line brought us to Asakusa where the Sensoji temple was all the way to Shibuya.

Our first stop was at the far end of the Ginza Line. The Asakusa – Sensoji Temple is a huuge Buddhist temple that’s just a few steps away from the Asakusa station. Between the temple’s two gates is Nakamise which is a line of  small shops selling a variety of local food wrapped in the prettiest packages and other souvenir items. We did most of our pasalubong shopping here for friends and office mates, mostly food items and a bunch of tshirts for BDW, his dad and my dad We also bought DW a sumo shirt here! We really wanted to buy him a kid’s kimono but it was too expensive and we were pretty sure DW wouldn’t wear it anyway We saw a ninja outfit for kids too!
