Sun Life Financial’s SunShorts: Oh My Goth!

What are your superstitions? I knock on wood when I hear something bad about someone but if I can’t find wood though I knock on my elbows. My lucky number? The number da 13 (I know baliktad haha) and I believe in “bati” as in if someone comments that walang traffic along EDSA while we’re in the car I would shush them and say “wag mong batiin!” because the traffic might get heavier. Well, Holy Week lang naman maluwag ang EDSA if I think about it.

BDW, one of the most rational and sensible people I know has superstitions too but they all involve basketball, a game he loooooves playing. If he wins a game, he will eat the same meal that he had before the winning game before the next game. If he’s at the free throw line, he dribbles 4 times before he shoots. I asked him if he’s the type to wear the same socks so as not to break a winning streak , hindi naman daw (buti na lang!)

I recognize all of the superstitious beliefs the lola in the movie believes in. Crazy as some of these pamahiins are, I know that we all cling to them because they just work! We won’t lose anything anyway if we stop believing right? No one knows what lies ahead anyway. Our superstitions make the unknown future a safer thing to grasp and undrestand.

Pero if that time comes and when things don’t go our way, where will our superstitions take us?  I don’t think St. Luke’s will accept my lucky cat as a payment 😛

When I finally was earning enough that I can actually save some money for a rainy day, I didn’t just put my money in a time deposit, I took it a step further —I bought insurance. I’m happy to say that I’m a year away from fully paying off a plan I purchased 10 years ago. I felt so grown when I signed that plan with my agent. It was a milestone for me. That plan has also evolved with my life. When I was single, it was so that if I fall gravely ill, I have something to pay for my hospital bills. I didn’t want my parents to worry about finances. It was also, as morbid as it sounds, a way for me to leave something for my parents when I pass on.
Now that plan has changed again now that I’m a mom and a wife. The money I’ve saved with that plan will go to my new family, and probably use some of it to help pay with tuition. I don’t want  to worry about money when (KNOCK ON WOOD!) something happens to any of them. I want the flexibility to go to any hospital and tell them to treat my family in the best possible way because I have the money to pay for the expenses. Insurance, as technical and boring as it sounds is there to be our safety net when that time comes. We can still be superstitious I believe it’s a healthy thing. I still keep a lucky cat in my room because you know, it might help bring in good vibes to our house. But I know that what keeps me assured are my insurance and my savings. If all else fails, mag-a-audition kay Chris Martinez and be Lilia Cuntapay’s stunt double! 😀
