One of the most-awaited mommy events is just a few days away. Mommy Mundo’s Expo Mom will be on April 6 and 7 at the Rockwell Tent. The Expo always comes up with really clever themes and this year is no exception, MOMTUITION is the theme of the year.
But what exactly is Mom Intuition/Momtuition? For me, it’s an enhanced form of female intuition, that often felt but alas often ignored “kutob” that something good (or bad) will happen. It’s the inner voice that prods me to make decisions concerning my family. It’s the filter that allows me to figure out what’s good and what’s not so good for my children, my husband and my family. It’s Mommy common sense now that I think about it 🙂
I fully believe that Momtuition kicks in during pregnancy. The intimate intertwining of body and soul for 9 months forms the superpower that is your instinct and intuition.
It’s not just a bunch of voodoo too. The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest and most respected general medical journals suggests that doctors should take mother’s instincts into serious consideration when treating sick kids. Judith Orloff, M.D., psychiatrist and author of the New York Times bestseller “Second Sight,” supports this statement and says that in her profession, she has seen intuition at work many times, especially among mothers.
Personally, my Momtuition kicks in when I’m away from my kids, which is a lot of times because I’ve gone back to work already. It’s that gnawing feeling I get at the pit of my stomach that pushes me to pick up the phone and call home and ask if the kids are alright; if David is being a good kuya and if Noah has pooped already.
It seems that Momtuition is such a natural thing though that everything that has happened because I acted on this instinct is now an ordinary part of my parenting. I remember it in action vividly when Noah was sick last December. His doctor told me to wait before giving him the antibiotics she prescribed. I followed my gut though and gave Noah the meds as soon as we got home. Noah’s condition didn’t change and because of that, we rushed him to the ER. True enough Noah’s lungs showed the beginnings of pneumonia and because I gave him the antibiotics early, it stopped the growth of the pneumonia. Instead of staying in the hospital for 5 days, we were in for three and Noah, the awesome fighter that he is, kicked pneumonia in its ass without even losing weight!!
My fellow SoMoms also talked about when they acted on their Momtuition.
