I have to say that this is the EASIEST and tastiest sandwich you could make with just THREE ingredients. The emphasis is on the word “easiest” because, well, I’ve already professed to you about my lack of any kitchen skills and so I’m starting small.
The recipes I’ve been searching over the net are simple and easy, 10-minute quick fire deals that would allow me to feed my family of two often hungry boys. For this one, I used a recipe from Home Hacks.
Before we go to the hows, I have to refer you to this post “When Can My Baby Eat Cheese” which tells, in addition to other interesting cheesy facts,ย which cheeses are safe for babies. This site is a great resource for us parents who want to be sure if our kids are ready for certain kinds of food. As for cheeses, the bottom line is to only use those that have been made with pasteurized milk. For DW’s first grilled cheese sandwich, I used Bega slices, safe for baby but a bit bland for BDW.
Instructions:
1. Assemble a cheese sandwich. I used Bega slices.
2. Spread butter on the outside of the whole sandwich . I used Anchor’s unsalted butter for this and a pastry brush. Brushing butter on bread seriously made me feel like a pro :p
3. Throw the sandwich onto a non-stick pan. Cover the pan to generate more heat to melt the cheese.
4. Cut the sandwich into triangles or tiny squares for tiny hands to hold
The whole process takes about 4 minutes.ย I’ve also read online that grating the cheese creates a better texture and much more even melting. Personally, I’d like to try this sandwich with tomatoes and probably use our panini press and see what happens. When I was growing up we had an imarflex sandwich maker (do they still have those??), that could work with this recipe as well. Pan-frying is much more fun though.
For grown ups, you can combine two cheeses, notakeout.com recommends sharp cheddar and a milder monterey jack. I’ve seen these stocked in our local groceries at their deli and cheese sections (I know Shopwise and Rustan’s have these).
And so goes my 2nd attempt at feeding my family haha ๐ย I’d like to leave you with this image from Benny and Joon. Sam, played by Johnny Depp does his own version of a grilled cheese sandwich. ENJOY!
Here’s the scene, fast forward to 6:03…or not, Johnny Depp is extra cute in this movie ๐

March 17, 2010 at 1:58 pmbeen a long time since i had these! yum! my son can’t have cheese kasi, but my girl loves to eat plain cheese slices. You can do the same procedure with peanut butter and jelly, and add bananas if you’re more adventurous with the sandwich ๐
