Although classes has started already, I know that a lot of parents like me are still on the lookout for enrichment after school programs that will supplement what our kids are learning in schools (or in therapy). David has finished his second round of Ready Steady Go Kids and his math summer teacher has texted me about new schedules. I am tempted to enroll David again in Math because he enjoyed it last summer but one class that I am looking into is Engineering For Kids. I know it sounds serious but the way the program is built actually encourages kids to learn more about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in a fun way.
Bakit walang ganito when I was growing up? I loved Science, most especially Biology (I actually applied for Bio in UP haha!) but I never really explored Technology, Engineering and most especially Math. There is a movement in the US for kids to explore STEM through play, exploration and discovery. This experience encouraged the SMILE group to bring Engineering for Kids to the Philippines. There are 10 programs for kids to participate in: Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Game Design, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Each program has 2 levels: Junior Engineers (4-6 years old), and Apprentice/Master Engineers for (7-14 years old)
Here is a sample schedule of what they offered just this summer. They even have a toddlers class for Lego.
Here’s a sample of what happens in class:
And here’s Chesca Tenorio of SMILE talking more about the program:
I love that this program is messy and hands-on and I’m glad that the STEM advocacy is also beginning to bloom here in the Philippines. Maybe the next generation of Pinoys would all be wonderful inventors, physicists and scientists!!
