It was my teammates who asked if this year’s Mother’s Day was my first.I said yes, beaming. BDW however quickly corrected me and told me it was my second. I couldn’t believe that I’ve been a mom for two years now. It only seems like yesterday that I was in St. Luke’s crying over my son, completely overwhelmed.
My teammates gave me a huge chocolate cake with caramel sauce for mother’s day. It was awesome and I absolutely appreciated the gesture. More than anything though, I felt awkward,I’m a new mom and I feel that I have yet to earn that “title” yet. Being a mom is a role I took on without any expectations and preparation! I never realized how hard my mom really worked until I became one and now my mom absolutely adores DW and is a great lola to my kid.
What I hold dear now, what I consider the perks of motherhood if you can call it that– is that I have a happy, thriving family who is loved by our own families and friends. DW is a firecracker whose latest achievement is pointing to himself and saying ‘Gi (for Pogi) wahaha! BDW enjoys his work now for it challenges him and he works for a boss that truly trusts his skills and nurtures his talent.
Being a mom made me appreciate my own mom so much more. My mom is the reason for the sense of peace I carry with me when I go to work because I know DW is being cared for by a Lola who loves him to pieces. It was my mom who saved me from the blues during the first month of giving birth to DW because she let me sleep-in and she allowed me to rest and to gather my wits about me; who encouraged and supported me and BDW when we were just so clueless and overwhelemed with a brand new baby. The love I feel for my mom now is different. I guess it comes from my own maturity and for finally being in her shoes. It’s absolute appreciation and gratitude.
I salute all mothers and to those who “mother” — those who care and love unconditionally. Hats off to you folks, you all inspire me to be the best mom I could be. And to my mom, I love you and I thank you for loving me, my husband and most especially your apo 🙂
