We have a Grade 1 student guys.
David moved to a new school for 1st Grade. He was with a progressive school before and now he’s at a traditional school. It’s a huge school with 38 students per class versus his previous school where there were 16 at most. Truth be told, I loved David’s old school but when David passed the entrance exams for this traditional school, I wanted David to give this new school a chance as well. David needs structure and routine and I am hoping the new school will provide him with these and or course, more. I am on the edge of my seat looking for reassurances that we made the right choice. One thing that’s a source of comfort for me is that my friend’s kid is his classmate. Making friends in a new school can be hard so it’s such a relief knowing that there is a familiar face in his class.
We signed David up for morning classes so that the driver will be free in the afternoon to drive Noah to therapy. David’s classes start at 7:15. However given the notorious traffic in his school’s area we have to leave the house by 6:15, despite the fact that we live close to his school. David loves sleeping in (he takes it from me I guess hehe) so waking up at 5 am is huge deal for him. Dan and I have been driving him to school too so it all means early mornings and huge cups of coffee for us.
I do love dropping off David at school. He seems so independent and “grown” while he’s holding on to his lunchbox and pulling his trolley bag along the school corridors. I always sigh heavily after the drop off. It only seemed yesterday when I dropped him off at his playschool…
I was frazzled because everything was done at the last minute: the uniform, the patches, the big trolley bag, the books, the orientations, name tags. Whew. To be fair, some of these were not my fault. The school ran out of polo uniforms in David’s size which we pre-ordered and paid for a few months back. We got his school polos on Monday, the first day of school. Alam nyo bang August pa dadating PE uniform ni David? Bravo!! But anyway, that’s not my problem. It’s the school’s and the suppliers’. Buti na lang talaga Ate Ann is diligent and takes on some of the tasks herself. She sewed on Kuya’s patches while Noah was napping. She had the fetchers cards laminated and she texts me whenever David needs something for school. I don’t know what I’ll do without Yaya Ann. She has been such a huge help to us and she is super loved by David and Noah.
I think the highlight of my cramming is when Dan and I were frantically searching for things to put in Kuya’s Go-Bag. One of the things required are glow sticks. We went to camping supplies stores and out of stock ang glow sticks. Bakit nga ba out of stock ang glow sticks?! Is there a huge ongoing rave that we don’t know about? Anyway, I went to National and found this:
So yeah, David is prepared for an emergency, a rave and/or an emergency rave…
I remember when I was in grade school, I would always call my mom from our school’s payphone to tell her the stuff we need for the next day and it’s always such a rush (and a big deal for me) And my mom, would always ALWAYS pull through. Whether it’s an inflatable globe, a new book, a new dress for an event, she would always come home straight from work and have those ready for me. Now I know the feeling. Oh my god. My lunch hours are all about going to National, Office Warehouse or the grocery to do last minute errands. It’s all about picking up little things to complete what David needs for school.
I really don’t know how I’m able to work during the day to be honest what with all these “distractions” in my head. Sometimes it seems impossible but I guess Tina Fey said it best:
So cheers to all you moms and dads who have survived the opening of classes!! To those who will be starting classes soon, I raise my hat and my mug of hot black coffee to ya!
Good luck to all of us 😀
