Dan and I have just become lifetime members of the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines. Although the group has a webpage, it is the group’s facebook page that brings the members together. It has become the most effective form of exchanging updates and information by members of the association.

DSAPI was formed in 1991 when two families were brought together by their kids who were born a few weeks apart and who were both diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Gerry Walmsley and his wife Baebie, Tony Pasia and his wife Dottie, met for dinner and figured that there must be other parents who, like them were at a loss about what Down Syndrome is and who needed guidance and more importantly support. Absent the internet back then the 8 founding families of DSAPI learned the benefits of early intervention and how to manage the health of their children together. 20 years later, their kids are a testimony of the power of a caring community.

Flash forward to today and the FB page of DSAPI has 2,592 members. The page is a flurry of posts, updates and pics of happy kids who are loved not just by their families but by everyone in the association as well. Information about programs and seminars are made easier because of the page and clicking the join button of an event automatically registers one to an activity of the association. Support from the group is palpable and is made possible because of the page.

This is certainly an example of how the power of the internet is positively harnessed. The speed of sharing within the Pinoy DS community has certainly changed over the course of 20 years beginning on that night the Pasias and Walmsleys sat down for dinner. Internet service providers like Smart have made it really easy for parents within the community to reach out to one another.

Now Smart is offering a faster way of connecting and sharing via its LTE services with speeds of up to 42MBPs.
