We have steak nights every once in a while at our house. Dan and I are steak lovers and as much as we love dining out for good steak, we sometimes have to pare down our spending and so we just buy good steaks at our nearby grocery or S&R and we cook the steaks ourselves.
Now my take on cooking good steak is that it all depends on the quality of steak that you buy. Our favorite cuts of steak are the rib-eye and t-bone as they require only a short bit of pan-frying. Now the big secret here is that we cook the steaks a few hours after we buy them so that they’re fresh.
When I got to take home some sample steaks from the Meltique Beef launch, Dan and I were excited to cook them but it was a Friday and we both got home left so I stored the samples in the freezer. I only got to take them out last Friday when both Dan and I were working from home. I took out the steaks and thawed them in a bowl of water.
Dan minced garlic, took out the butter and prepped the frying pan. Once the pan was hot enough, in came the butter then the garlic then the steak. He turned the steak once he saw the juices (aka the blood) pooling on the uncooked side. Once turned he waited a few minutes then voila, luto na!
Seasoning is via salt and pepper only. We also use McCormick’s broiled steak seasoning. A tablespoon per steak with a through rubbing per side is all that its needed. I would love to try other seasonings though so if you have personal favorites that you can recommend please let me know! I would love to try them.
The ribeye was good but we expected it to be good. It was the striploin steak that was a revelation. It was such a perfect slab of juicy beefy goodness. Dan and I have never considered this cut when buying steaks well this cut is now part of our grocery list.
We love meat, we love our steaks and we love cooking our own when the time allows. We have never tried Meltique but at 5 pcs for 1,500 at S&R pwede na if we have enough extra budget for our groceries.
You know what goes with steak? This salad. Too bad we didn’t buy french beans. This steak meal would have been even more delicious!

November 2, 2014 at 12:42 amJust know first that Meltique steaks are “simulated” steak cuts. They are formed and shaped by “meat glue” or transglutaminase. Nothing really wrong with that as it is GRAS or Generally Regarded As Safe. No need to be alarmed, meat glue is the same stuff used on fish balls, squid balls, carb sticks, chicken nuggets, commercial ham and cold cuts etc. Anyway, just thought you should know when you are comparing the “shaped” steaks versus the real cuts of beef.

June 19, 2014 at 4:17 pmWe have steak nights at home too! I have never tried Meltique beef but I have seen it around…I try it soon! We are currently loving the beef at the Kitayama meat shop. It’s local wagyu breed beef. They have all kinds of cuts and grades so you will always find something…whether you are up for a splurge or being thrifty. Our latest discovery there is the chuck roll, which is not a prime cut, so cheaper than ribeye and t-bone, but delicious because of the marbling. I think I may have posted a pic on IG…
We love to experiment with different rubs too but one of our old standbys is the McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak seasoning 🙂
